What to Expect

Students ask, “Am I doing this right?”. Teachers wonder, “How can I help this person?”

Well, there are lots of ways we can help ourselves and our students. There are lots of ways to get it wrong as well.

Join us and find out how to evaluate an expression of a Yoga posture – in yourself or others. You’ll learn techniques that help bodies ease into more functional alignments. It can be done verbally, energetically or through accurate and positive touch.

But when is it best to intervene, when to let things be? And what about the teacher’s own unwillingness to engage for some reason? There are two sides to the consent question, and both must be addressed. We look at best practices to make safe space for all, and to build boundaried, constructive practice relationships. People need to be comfortable in themselves, and in the progress that both can make by interacting as teacher and student.

We cover how to deliver adjustments in an efficient, effective way. For instance, what are the best ways to language the verbal adjustments? What tone of voice options suit different practice situations? And what quality of touch is most suitable for physical adjustments?

This is not a course about asana, but you will learn a lot about the common structural elements of the different types of asana (such as forward fields, standing postures, balances, etc). You’ll see the postures as a set of linkages, and be able to spot the “weak links” in the chain. You’ll have tools (verbal, physical, energetic) with which to help yourself and others.

The key word for all adjustments – especially physical –  is ease. Many teachers use an element of force or bodyweight. These increase injury risk and put the student’s nervous system on high alert. We will highlight how to avoid resorting to force – and remember, force can be conveyed just by tone of voice.

No one has to offer adjustments. However, teachers can really help people accelerate progress by providing real-time feedback, which may just be well-phrased words that convey exactly what the person needs to do. Of course, some teachers are not 100% confident that they really know how to help. We’ll look at both sides of the equation – what are the structural changes that most people can make, and what is the relationship dynamic between the leader and the person practising?

This is not a specialist course for managing classes for people with the particular needs that deep trauma brings. However, even in public classes, trauma is often present for some people but not yet in their conscious awareness. This course will help you to build positive relationships and encourage progress sensitively.

This course is for anyone interested in yoga and yoga asana. It’s assumed that you have some kind of Yoga practice already, but you don’t have to be a teacher.

This module is formally assessed. Upon successful completion of the study period and the assessment, you’ll earn 50 CPD hours to add to your professional teaching profile. You can choose your method of assessment from these options:

  1. Design a 3 hour workshop for Yoga practitioners that focuses on the study topics. You will need to submit your workshop plans, a selection of feedback from attendees, and a report describing how you integrated your new knowledge into the content.
  2. Prepare a 3000 word case study describing how you’ve used your new knowledge and skills in an attempt to help yourself or someone else. Your case study will outline the initial conditions for your chosen subject: how this person (or you) presents in postures, what they (or you) considered to be significant challenges etc. You’ll describe practices and facilitations that you selected to assist. Practices should feature mostly Yoga asana. Assists should be a mixture of verbal, physical and energetic.  You’ll justify why you think these might help, and over what period they were applied. Your case study will include a short report on the outcome: your candidate (or you) will describe how they now feel about their significant challenges and what has changed for them. Your report will feature your personal conclusion: why do you think the stated outcome arose? What direction would you take your work in next? It doesn’t matter if your candidate reports that the practices don’t work: it’s more important to look at the reasons why the outcome might have arisen, and state what can be learned from this.
