What to expect
Yin Yoga has grown up with a strong connection to Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture). We find that Yin postures stimulate the meridian lines, and its longer holds give space for positive energetic change in related organ systems.
In this module, you’ll look at how this works. We’ll cover the detailed structure of all the “official” Yin postures, and best practices for learning and teaching them. You’ll hear all about the paths and properties of the meridians from one of leading acupuncturists in the South West. The energy conducted through the meridians is important for health and emotional wellbeing. You’ll hear directly how and why this is so.
But how do you use all this information? We’ll look at ways to design Yin sequences to move us or our students towards positive energetic outcomes. You’ll understand and appreciate Yin Yoga as a set of tools for working deeply with the energetic self – whether that’s simply calming the bodymind, or integrating past experiences into greater wholeness today.
Yin Yoga is a relatively young practice, but its roots reach far back into Chinese body and breath practices of old. So we’ll spend some time learning about the background, history and evolution of Yin Yoga practice. We’ll revisit some of the original breathing methods, and contrast them with how we practise breath development in Yoga today.

To a degree, yes – Yin Yoga offers people time in the postures. It’s what you do with this time that counts, and how you sequence the movements. A random stretch class can change your flexibility – a well thought-out Yin practice can bring about that and profound changes to health and emotional wellbeing.
Anything taken to extremes becomes harmful – even stretching. Yin Yoga is much more than just stretching though. Against the backdrop of the energy meridians, you’re able to dial in deeper to the source of personal energy. The Yin toolkit is much more powerful than a few stretches could ever be.
Yin is the perfect complement to hard work of all kinds. Its links to energy management mean that this practice can rejuvenate and actively restore tired bodies.
Yin Yoga makes few demands. There are no rapid movements and it takes up very little space. It’s easy to practise at home – even if space is limited or you have small children / pets.
This module is formally assessed. Upon successful completion of the study period and the assessment, you’ll earn 50 CPD hours to add to your professional teaching profile. You can choose your method of assessment from these options:
- Design a 3 hour workshop for Yoga practitioners that focuses on the study topics. You will need to submit your workshop plans, a selection of feedback from attendees, and a report describing how you integrated your new knowledge into the content.
- Prepare a 3000 word case study describing how you’ve used your new knowledge and skills in an attempt to help yourself or someone else. Your case study will outline the initial conditions for your chosen subject: how this person (or you) was feeling, what they (or you) considered to be significant challenges etc. You’ll describe practices that you selected to assist. This should include mainly Yin asana, but could feature some breath exercises. You’ll justify why you think these practices might help, and over what period they were applied. Your case study will include a short report on the outcome: your candidate (or you) will describe how they now feel about their significant challenges and what has changed for them. Your report will feature your personal conclusion: why do you think the stated outcome arose? What direction would you take your work in next? It doesn’t matter if your candidate reports that the practices don’t work: it’s more important to look at the reasons why the outcome might have arisen, and state what can be learned from this.
