Today we shift focus away from Yoga oriented topics to focus on an issue that is dear to our heart at Yogafurie – reforestation to save the planet.
Amidst the severity of the global climate crisis, it’s rare that there is good news. Rare but not unheard of. A school of 1000 fin whales appeared in the Antarctic Peninsula. This species was nearing extinction, so it’s a much-needed metaphor of hope for the planet’s future.
But, the clock is ticking on climate change. And, there’s no time for complacency.
Everyone has a role to play in protecting our precious home.
To reduce CO2 emissions to zero, 1 trillion trees need to be planted worldwide by 2050. We need trees to absorb the damaging carbon dioxide we produce. Reforestation helps the globe to regenerate. Planting 1.2 trillion trees by 2050 can remove 200 billion tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere and bring its carbon levels to zero.
Right now, we’re at a critical time. Ramping up reforestation efforts means we may be in with a chance of averting a global environmental disaster.
At Yogafurie we’re on a mission to help preserve our woodlands. And we need your help.
The Yogafurie Mission
At the heart of our mission is a desire to improve the health of others and the earth through Yoga and reforestation.
Reforestation can potentially halt global warming. In an earlier blog, we outlined how planting a trillion trees can help achieve the target of zero carbon emissions by 2050. The blog cites a 2019 Guardian article, which claims that it can regenerate the earth, provided we start now. Reforestation can potentially halt global-warming.
We’re aiming to help reforest an area the size of mainland Britain through Yoga.
Yogafurie donates a percentage of revenue to a reforestation project by the Forest of Avon Trust. The charity has planted enough trees to sequester nearly 98 tonnes of carbon in their lifetime. The Trust’s reforestation project is set to double the amount of planted trees each year.
Not only is it successfully planting trees, the Trust also provides employment and improves the wellbeing of the local community. Their Woodland Wellbeing sessions have a hugely positive effect on the community. One testimonial describes it as ‘life-changing.’ And, a learning-disability worker describes how being in nature reduces disruption in the classroom.
At Yogafurie, we’ve hit our tree-planting targets for 2020 and 2021, planting 52 and 104 trees resepectively with the Forest of Avon Trust. In 2022, we’ll plant 208 trees.
We will continue to double our tree-planting efforts each year, which means in ten years time our Bristol studio will have planted 26,264 trees. That’s a lot of trees. It’s also a lot of fundraising and manpower.
How Can You Help?
Get Involved, Get Inspired
Indigenous stewardship is vital for the success of reforestation projects. Without the help of the community, the Trust will struggle to achieve it’s goals.
If you’re in Bristol, you can be part of the solution by getting involved with raising awareness, funds, and helping with tree planting days. Here are the tree planting dates.
Encourage anyone and everyone to enjoy the local woodlands. The Trust holds guided walks regularly. And, being out in nature is proven to improve mental health problems such as depression. For instance, a 2017 study found that attending a recreational forest site relieved depression.
As we will be doubling our tree planting each year, we will need double the help. The more people that get involved, the higher chance we have of hitting our goal.
